A detailed breakdown of our activities
- Fire lighting
Our most popular activity, with the use of ferrocerium rods and steel scrapers, the participant will create a shower of sparks to ignite the tinder provided. We encourage the safe use and good practice around fires and promote fire safety. The participant will not be required to build up their tinder into a functional fire in the interest of safety but the instructor may give occasional demonstrations throughout the day.
- Rope and knot skills
A selection of ropes will be on hand along with a display of various knots for you to practice. This has been our most surprising activity due to the high level of interest over a seemingly mundane activity. Some participants have spent almost an hour at the knot tying station and left wanting to learn more.
- Signaling
At the signaling station you can try your hand at sending and decoding a morse code message with our home made telegraph machines. decipher secret messages and solve the puzzle. You can also learn to create and use a signal mirror or create a secret message
- Traps
A display of functional, humane traps made from natural materials will be on display for you to interact with. A selection of artificial creatures will be provided to trigger the traps to help you understand their mechanisms. We only promote the use of humane, live capture traps and not the use of any traps intended to kill or maim.
- Tarps and shelters
If the space is available, we’ll set up a variety of tarps for you to explore and clamber about in. We'll set up some mini tarp arrangements for you to copy and practice with the equipment provided.
- Tracking
This display has a selection of cast tracks for you to create your own impressions in the sand tray. The information boards share details of who the tracks belong to and all about their movement through the wilds. A selection of tracking puzzles will be on hand for the younger explorers
- Wild tea
Who doesn’t love a cup of tea! A selection of natural teas will be available for you to try along with all the nutritional information you need to know about these delicious beverages that grow in your own back garden.
A member of staff will be on hand to ensure the hot water is handled safely.
- Natural cordage
Learn how to process natural fibres into a usable cordage. You can then turn that cordage into your own wild bracelet which you can decorate with colourful beads. An information board will tell you all you need to know about where to source the materials and show you a variety of uses.
- Mini Shelter building
If you have the space, we can provide a selection of natural materials for you to build natural shelters for our range of cuddly toys. These shelters are intended to mimic their much larger real life counterparts which often take several days to build. This activity is an excellent opportunity for families to work together (or compete) to express their creativity and logic skills
- Little explorers play tables
Something for the smallest of our wild explorers. Sand trays with colourful building blocks and animals for the toddlers to develop their dexterity skills with bright colors and lots of textures and a crafting table where you can assemble and decorate your very own insect hotel to hang in your own garden when you get home.
- Peg loom
A very simple method of weaving natural materials into a functional fabric. This method has been used for making clothes as well as building materials for centuries. Help add to our weave to create a great community piece that will visibly grow throughout the event.
- Campfire cooking
Join our dedicated member of staff in cooking a simple bannock bread recipe on a stick over hot coals. When the bread is cooked to a beautiful golden brown, you let it cool and add a delicious filling of either chocolate, jam or honey. This activity requires an additional 3m by 3m enclosed area with occasional breaks in the activities to allow for cleaning of equipment
- Natural shelter building
A selection of natural materials will be on hand for you to build a full size natural shelter with guidance from an instructor. Work together with lots of people to build a water tight shelter that will hold out the elements. In warmer weather the instructor might also test out the shelter with a watering can to simulate rain or a bucket full of water for a tropical deluge. This activity requires a large open area.
